ZEMZEME (Whisper) is Kooch's second album. The many different moods within
this album range from sad to happy, contemplative to defiant and sensual to
spiritual. There is, however, a common link, which gives the whole album a
kind of coherence. The sound of the band, in other words the arrangements
and performances, provide an earthy and haunting accompaniment for Cyrus
Khajavi's intimate yet powerful voice.
The words on this album are Iranian, the music, however, is a unique blend of influences and styles, that seem to have found a common ground to create a style, which can simply be described as his. This is not yet another 'east meets west ` type of experiment, or a forced fusion of styles. The music clearly has its roots in the east, both in terms of its emphasis on melody and its rhythmic fluidity. The textures, with the use of acoustic guitars (often with unusual open tunings), the setar, and various percussion instruments, also add a non-western edge to what would otherwise be a typical rock band line up. There is undoubtedly a rock element to the sound, which is hardly a surprise given the choice of instruments and the individual backgrounds of the musicians involved, all of whom are primarily rock musicians, but the essence of the music is unquestionably Iranian.
