Brian Mullan
Brian Mullan grew up by the sea in Cornwall. After school he left for London and took
a BMus followed by postgrad studies in cello, piano and composition. He went on to
freelance on the professional circuit, playing with chamber orchestras, opera
companies and especially with the Sterling String Quartet. In 1996 the Quartet gave
their Wigmore Hall debut recital and in the same year released a double CD on the
Conifer label.
Always interested in other styles of music, Brian has recorded cello lines for
TV/Radio productions and for numerous bands. He has toured with jazz pianist Abdullah
Ibrahim and performed at the Glasgow Jazz Festival. He has a continuing interest in
the new music scene, and is currently writing a new string quartet for a recital in
York. For a while Brian played both cello and keyboards in the Barry McGuigan Band, in
which he developed his taste for using up as much of the stage as possible.
In recent years Brian became addicted to Celtic melody, set about learning traditional
tunes on the cello and began to write tunes of his own. He became a regular on the
London session scene with The Other Brothers and played on the folk festival circuit
with Beware of the Dog. These days Brian plays with Clare in the Celtic/Roots 4-piece
Six Mile Walk.
Brian also likes to climb rocks and swim in the sea, and would like to have his own
helicopter in which to commute from Cornwall. He doesn't feel that it's too much to
ask.
